Troubleshoot spinning reel loops, wind knots and line twist by checking spool fill, bail habits, lure spin, line tension and leader knots.
“Wind knot” is a convenient name for a tangle, but wind is only one contributor. Loose line, overfilled spools, lure rotation and poor bail habits are common causes.
Close the bail by hand
Manual bail closure encourages you to confirm that the line is seated in the roller before retrieving.
Keep line tight
After a cast, remove slack before cranking. Retrieving loose line creates soft coils that can jump off the spool on the next cast.
Check spool fill
Too much line increases the chance that multiple coils leave the spool at once.
Watch spinning lures
Inline spinners, spoons and rigged soft plastics can twist line if they rotate. A swivel can help in appropriate presentations, but rigging the lure straight is the first step.
Inspect the leader knot
A bulky or poorly trimmed connection can catch guides and disturb line flow, especially with long leaders.
If line is heavily twisted, remove the lure, trail line behind a moving boat where safe and legal, or stretch it out on land and reel it back under tension.
