Many spinning reel problems begin with poor spooling. Loose coils, overfilling and line twist can turn a good reel into a frustrating one.
1. Check reel direction
Run line through the first rod guide and attach it to the spool. Close the bail by hand after tying the arbor connection.
2. Keep steady tension
Pinch the line with a soft cloth or gloved fingers and maintain moderate, consistent tension while winding.
3. Watch for twist
With mono or fluorocarbon from a filler spool, periodically stop and let the line relax. If it coils aggressively, flip the filler spool orientation.
4. Use backing for braid
Braid can slip on a smooth bare spool. A small amount of mono backing or manufacturer-approved spool preparation helps prevent the entire line package from spinning.
5. Do not overfill
Leave a small gap below the spool lip. Overfilling encourages loops to jump off the spool; underfilling can reduce casting distance.
6. Load line under real tension
After initial spooling, a controlled long cast and retrieve under tension can help seat the line evenly.
